As a result of industrial farming and modern food processing, the modern diet is very high in omega-6 fatty acids and low in omega-3s. While both of these fatty acids are essential—meaning you must get them from your diet—it’s critical to maintain the correct balance of each one. Too much omega-6s can result in high blood pressure, increased risk of blood clots, and chronic, systemic inflammation.
Historically, the ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 in our diet has ranged from 4:1 to 1:4. Today, however, that ratio is much too high at 16:1. Daily Essentials: Omegas is a convenient way to help lower that ratio and get more beneficial omega-3s in your diet. Including higher levels of omega-3s in your diet can help manage cholesterol, triglyceride, and blood pressure levels and calm inflammation.
When it comes to fish oil supplements, absorption is key. While omega-3s are found in foods such as walnuts and flaxseeds, many people can’t effectively convert the plant form to the biologically active form the body requires. The best source of omega-3s is cold water fish such as salmon, sardines, and mackerel. The omega-3 fatty acids in our Daily Essentials: Omegas are in the triglyceride (TG) form, which is the same as that found in whole fish. This form is most easily recognized by the body and allows for maximum absorbability.
